hooooo bouy, we’re making some changes around here!

1. Refreshed playbooks

Siren squad started with the art, then became a D&D game, then became its own game. It’s changes and morphed a lot over the years, and the original art doesn’t reflect the characters anymore. So all the playbooks are getting a glow up! I’ve chosen 7 playbooks for the CRB, each with its own punchy theme rather than having one group “color” theme. (Although the core merms will still be rainbow, because of who I am as a person.)

  • Jules, THE TINKER (she has a new steampunk mechanical tail!)
  • Fauna, THE PARROT (a new playbook, she can take on animal characteristics, talk to animals, etc)
  • Flora, THE BOTANIST (Flora and Fauna are sisters)
  • Liv, THE SPECTER (formerly the shadow)
  • Vanna, THE MYSTIC
  • Gabby, THE SOCIALITE
the new art is already sketched, but only half of them are finished. I’ll release the new art when I update the game.

2. Mechanical updates

There has been some tuning and noodling in the background for a while, and I think the changes really help focus the game.
  • Contested play is now an optional rule
  • Updates to gadgets/friendchips
  • Updates to abilities, added Talents
  • Clarity on a number of small points
  • Only a Showstopper can restore Morale to a Siren now
  • Updates to how target numbers work, and how bonuses/penalties affect them

3. Future plans

It might seem silly to look at add-ones with the core game is in progress, but I have ADHD so here we are.
  • A directors manual for creating your own missions, including prompts, random tables and step-by-step help (this is well under way, I’m writing it concurrently with with core rule book)
  • Location guides for some of the frequently visited places in the cerulean sea, including new NPCs
  • New missions with location expansions and themed playbooks (like the stargazer)
  • NPC token packs of the old siren art to use in VTTs
